Is it just the inside handle that doesn't work Trevor.
In the meanwhile, if there are suspicions over the locking motor, its a very bad plan to superlock.

I had a similar problem a cople of years ago, it turned out to be a dodgy locking mechanism caused by water ingress, in the end I bought a second hand item from MGFC which has worked perfectly since.

No it woudn't open from the outside handle either and the central locking pin woudn't lift up on top of the door either, even though the drivers door worked O.K. Anyway after i drove approx 20 miles home it all worked O.K. Wondered if it was worth changing the inside lock on that door????
Cheers Trevor. :)
