You've probably heard my preference before: Bridgestone SO2 Pole Position 205 x 45 x R16s all round. Not the hardest wearing tyre, but wet and dry grip is excellent and the predictability with my MGF's setup is what keeps me paying 90 quid per corner every 10,000 miles.

Narrower tyres were allegedly put on the front to promote understeer. Maybe you should stick with that until you have tamed that back end a bit.

I would stick with the same tyre brand and model on each corner.
If there is sufficient choice of sizes I would fit something towards the narrower end of the range to get better performance from the carcase.
One advantage to having the same size all round is you can rotate them round the car to even out the wear.
If you get the chance at a trackday watch Dave carefully - given room he makes full use of the cars handling, not just its horsepower. Plus get instructor sessions when you can, very good value compared to the cost of a tyre.
