Suggestions for 2008 Track days.
:D Hi Folks,
Sorry i forgot to mention ANGLESEY and KNOCKHILL.
Knockhill is a brilliant circuit just a little too far for a lot of people.
But well worth the visit.

2008 Trackday Wish list
How about a new circuit for 2008, e.g. Oulton Park? I used to do a lot of sprints here with the club in the 80's, it is a lovley circuit and just as much fun as Donington.
My 2008 wish list is;-
Anglesey - remember this circuit has been totally reconstructed and is a new layout
Oulton Park,
Donington,
Croft.
Silverstone.
Cheers

I am Tim, in fact I suggested it to Dave when they first announced they were thinking of plans for next year. So it would be a long trip for both of us, but I'm definately up for it and would make it a long-weekend break. Also there must be some Scottish members, are there not
Thruxton, my local track so I'd love to do it, but I know some people who work there and they are not keen on track day clubs. They have very high charges because of this and few dates available.
Silverstone GP, Castle Coombe, Goodwood and Brands definate, Snetterton I enjoyed the 1 1/2 sessions I had there until the HGF  so wouldn't mind going back.

Not surprised they don't like clubs when they can get £150 an hour  from Joe public.

Too expensive ???
I have heard that Thruxton was suggested as a venue for this year but rejected as too pricey..:(
If that is the case there are plenty of other circuits who welcome us ..:)
Regret that any tracks north of Doni look to be out for me but you guys should go for it ...:p
Variety is the spice I life I was told ...:D
See you at Goodwood ..Gary ..

Being on the south coast (portsmouth) anywhere further north than birmingham is a bit of trek. So my list would be for tracks south of Donington & EXCLUDING Pembrey, Cadwell & Snetterton as they would be too far & make it too long a day.
Lydden might be a good bet seen as thought its an independantly run track therefore might be quite reasonably priced as not being part of the MSV
How about an excursion to foreign fields with a w/end trip to a french track. For me I know I have a slight advantage by being quite near a ferry port but it could be good fun.

VW Golf..Wots that ????
Hi Tamsin ....While we welcome many different marques we also make use of the Travelodge company ....My personal thoughts on your sugested E/Kent track is that it is just a 45 second merry go round ..
While it may have its plus points Lydden aint for me ...:(
Even though I live in Eastbourne ,,,
Bests from me ad BVZ ...:)

have you been looking at my profile!!!
whats wrong with a reliable practicable car for every day use & then have fun with the midget at the w/ends!!

Tamsin, a friend an I may be organising a trackday at Lydden early next year. I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

lydden?
OK, could be interested, as my other half has raced there, & despite it being a short lap it does have some quite challenging corners

Oulton Park
Anglesea

Goodwood, PLEASE. I can't go on November 5th any year, even if it is Goodwood, so please do it again next year.
Thruxton
Silverstone GP
Oulton Park
+ how about the Top Gear circuit at Dunsfold? Is it available? Would be interesting to get some comparative times against the 'Star in a Reasonable Priced Car'!!

Along with my earlier wishes, I quite fancy Pembrey the track guide sounds very interesting.
Not too many shouts for Knockhill though :( which is a pity. Before anybody comes up with the too far away, Tim and I are on the South Coast and game for it. In fact I'd be more game for this than a jolly to Europe, although I suspect a European jolly would be cheaper.
Has anybody ever thought of an MGs-on-track group trip to the Nordschleife (Nurburgring)?
|
01/11/2007 22:06:20
A vote for Bedford Autodrome. Not quite the same thrill as a "proper" race circuit, but pushing to & over the limit is safe enough that it's actively encouraged & in a 260 that's a good enough reason for me.

Trackday Wishlist
Most definitely Thruxton, but the restrictions are so bad it might not be possible.
Otherwise:
Goodwood
Brands - GP circuit?
Cadwell - for the Mountain!
Mallory
Silverstone
Although I would be willing to travel once I get the towbar on the barge!

I'd be keen to go to Mallory Park, I see it's got two mentions so far, no idea what its policy is on trackdays though. Other than that I'm keen to go to Silverstone and Donington next year.

Track day wish list - Dunsfold
Yer, I agree with Richard Whale, a trip to Dunsfold would be interesting as it would be good to compare times not only with the stars but also the cars driven by the Stig! Perhaps Top Gear would run a feature on it?

Been there for 3 laps, much more interesting than I thought it would be. How about the 'Ring and Spa on the way there or back??

Has anyone tried any of the motorsport-events.com track days? I get regular spam e-mails from them promoting track days (makes a change from Viagra and more useful at my age!). They list 9 different tracks including Abingdon, Pembray and Mallory Park. Apart from Mallory they seem to be mainly airfield courses.

As a complete novice, I'd quite like to try Bedford Autodrome to discover the limit of both my talent (minimal) and the car's abilities (probably the same!) in relative safety. From a purely selfish point of view, if this could be early in the year, it would help to set me up for the 'real' circuits. On that front, I'd love to have a crack at a selection from the following:
Donington, Goodwood, Silverstone, Brands, Castle Combe, Cadwell, Mallory, Snetterton

Motorsport events have really cornered the airfield market. They are generally well run days, usually open pit lane with a wide variety of cars.
Being run on airfields with a 'circuit' marked out by cones they can lack some of the atmosphere of being at a real circuit.
Never the less they do appear to represent good value.

The safest and most economical way to find your and the car's limit is to join us at North Weald.
These driver activity days are designed just for that purpose.
In addition we have Andy Walsh, from 1st lotus, on hand to offer advice and guidance.
We are planning to have another one early in 2008.

Steve
As an aside - there are several reasons that MGs on Track don't attempt to do airfield days:
1. organisers have to arrange for their own safety services - ambulance; fire crew; marshalls; etc. which are provided as part of the package when we hire a UK race circuit.
2. most have concrete surfaces which can be pretty hard on tyres.
3. some have very 'dirty' surfaces what can produce lots of stone chips on paintwork.
Obviously the big factor is no 1. By the way, this is also applies to some European venues who again do not offer safety services as part of the hire package.

Many thanks Steve - I had planned to do a North Weald day as well. I managed to miss both of them last as they clashed with holidays.
Looking forward to 2008 already...

Gavin,
as a complete novice I went to Cadwell Park on sunday (25/11/07), it was well worth it, so long as you comply with the 'rules' and keep a good look out it is an experience well worth doing. I looked at many track day sites, the MSV one points out that there is instruction available and novices should not worry too much. Having gone ahead and done it, I would advice you just to go out there and find a date & track close or suitable for you. Although I have not been on a MGoT event, we are booked in for 10/11/07, do not wait, go and grab the wheel. But do go for instruction. One point, it maybe due to a number of different clubs being there but Cadwell was not 'overly' friendly, the novices managed to speak to one another about the experience, but the club guys were in 'cliques'. But it did not spoil the day, the instructor was brilliant, my speed increased and my confidence was enhanced. My wife and co-pilot wants a go the next time we book.
Just go for it.
Good luck, Peter

Thanks Peter. I am definitely going to take the plunge and do as many track days as my wallet and schedule allow next year. The car's finally ready (many ££££s spent, in other words!), I've got a helmet that's not going to be much use for anything else and following a visit to Goodwood at the beginning of the month, where I managed to blag a couple of passenger rides (thanks to John and Barry), I've got the bug...

The MGoT Programme for 2008 is coming together well, there'll be some regular favourites and some exciting new ventures.
We are hoping to publish the calendar before Christmas or very soon after.
So, keep a look out on the News and Events page. :)

Really looking forward to seeing next years events, especially as it will probably be the only surprise I'll get this Christmas
So, well done Steve and the Committee, we all appreciate your hard work :D
I hope you all have a Happy Christmas and less nerve racking New Year.

For me silverstone would be high up on the list!

A number of people asked whether we could organise a track day at The Ring (Nurburgring - Nordschleife) in 2008. We've tended to answer individually, but I thought I'd share this bit of info publically for once. It will give you some idea of what we're up against!
The only UK track day organiser who can currently book The Ring is RMA, an upmarket organiser catering for regular track dayers who'd typically own specialised track day cars.
RMA have just published their 2008 calendar. They have track days at The Ring in March and October where the price for a car is £675. Admittedly this is for a weekend i.e. two day's access, but that is also part of the issue - getting dates at these venues. Similarly they have some two-day Spa events in May, July and October for £575.
Their cheapest day is Snetterton in April at £175. Their other days at Donington and Brands Indy in August are £295 and £245 respectively.
Whilst it is clear that RMA are a profit making organisation and MGoT are not, this still gives you some idea of the relative costs of circuits with reputations like The Ring and Spa, as well as the difficulty of obtaining dates at such venues.
I hope this insight is of interest.
|
28/01/2008 11:18:53
Still want to do Spa and Nurburgring though - do RMA offer a complete weekend package - hotel and all?
|
28/01/2008 12:12:28
Still want to do Spa and Nurburgring though - do RMA offer a complete weekend package - hotel and all?
I imagine that they might, but I don't think the cost is included in the £675! Bear in mind that you'd need to book both a Spa and a Nurburgring weekend - a total of £1450
Actually, I think that there is another track day organiser that does Spa and with them you could just book rather than RMA's weekend. However, I'm fairly certain that only RMA do dedicated track days at Nurburgring. Anyone else, will be offering something based on a public day where you'll meet buses, motorbikes and all sorts

I checked out the Lotus-on-Track website and they have track days at some good European circuits. I know MGoT have a good relationship with LoT, so what are the chances of us tagging along with them on some of their European trips? Le Mans Bugatti and Dijon in particular would be fantastic track day venues.

Hi Joe,
Yes, the Lotus boys do quite a lot of overseas days. The Dijon event is part of their French Frolic - a 7 day trip costing £650. There is an option for 15 extra cars to just go to do Dijon, but it is still £150 just for that one event. Of course you have to add travel and accommodation.
The Le Man Bugatti and Spa days are where LoT take a limited number of places from a commercial operator as even they can't fill Spa themselves! It's £220 plus travel and accomodation for either.
I can ask Paul, the Lotus organiser, if you want me to, but I would expect him to not really want MGs going along, even if there were free places. The events are advertised as Intermediate/Advanced drivers only which means they will predominantly be the faster cars - 300bhp Exiges with very experienced drivers - so a bit quicker than any MG.
Anyway, let me know if you want me to ask formally.
Regards,
Dave
