Hi all, I haven't asked anything for a while so thought i'd better ;) I've just been perusing some of the photo's from other trackdays and noticed two things: 1 - all the photo's of people driving F's have got the roof down, I presume this is because of the need to wear a helmet, but I don't like driving with the roof down when going at speed. does it make much difference (having the roof up or down) to the characteristics of the car? 2 - Some people have brought along spare/extra wheels. Some of the more 'serious' trackers may have track tyre's, but how do they get them there? one under the bonnet and three in the boot??

1. The majority of F drivers drive on circuit with the roof down for the simple reason that they like it.... Driving with the roof up is not a problem for all but the very tall I'm talking 6'1" and taller when the helmet does tend to knock the metal frame of the soft top. I'm 6' and have driven with the roof up on many occasions. 2. In fact very few F drivers have spare wheels, those which do trailer their cars to the track days and use special wheel racks. Selecting a suitable track tyre which is also suitable for track use isn't too difficult, Goodyear F1's and Bridgestone SO2's are frequently the tyre of choice for the manners both on, and off track. If you want to try a track tyre Toyo 888's are very good (although your rear wheel bearing might not last quite so long!), yes, they are road legal so will allow you to drive to the track but I'd would recommend that you have these on a second set of rims and use other tyres for general road use (they might be a bit hairy in the wet though!). When I started trackdays I used to keep the hood up, it can get rather hot. Soon discovered that driving top down at speed wearing a helmet on is quite different. There isn't anywhere near as much noise or buffetting. Not only that, you get much better photos to show your friends :D Many tracks have a rule that you cannot wear an open face helmet with the top down but, as you will see from many photos, it isn't often enforced too strongly.
