Did anyone really think an MG couldn't fully exploit the Grand Prix circuit? Wrong! Best fun I've had this year, with the weather throwing a few curve balls it was never even slightly predictable. Spreading the cars out on very long lap meant everyone could enjoy plenty of 'track to myself' time, which felt rather special. Can't wait for the F1 race so I can bore everyone senseless :D I see now that Luffield is an altogether different beast than the one we're used to on the National circuit, witnessed by the collection of mud and grass that I'll be reluctant to wash off the car for some time ;) Hearty thanks to all involved in the organisation, and I hope the marshals appreciated how much less work they had to do on the MG sessions than when the Loti were 'experimenting' :D Hope everyone got home safely in the finally more determined rain, when we find out who is running the British climate we'll congratulate them on their scheduling ;) ________ MEDICAL MARIJUANA

That was a fantastic day on a fantastic circuit! :) As first-timer I found that the MGF can be scary fast in corners   Before I thought that GP circuit would be way too big for it, but clearly I was wrong Thanks to MGoT guys for organizing this great day! PS The very last session when it started to rain was rather exciting

A Fabulous day The weather was certainly a tease but kept us on our toes Thanks Guys Stu

I'd just like to re-echo what's been said above. A great day in good company, and the first time I haven't been on the grass at Silverstone! See you all at Donny :D

Agree with all the above. Thanks to Dave and the MGOT team for giving us the opportunity to drive the full circuit. Personal highlight was "almost" running out of road on the exit of Stowe corner  (anyone else forget about the slight left out of Stowe into Vale?)… still, at least the cone in the middle of the road kept us wide during one session.. Hope the Lotus guys that brushed the pit wall are ok (and anyone else who had a near miss in the paddock - those wind-powered wheelie bins were a bit worrying!) Thanks again!

Hmm, I wonder why :D Was a good day and the weather was better than expected, thanks again to the MGoT crew. I should be able to post a link to the incar video later in the week, see if you can spot yourselves!

Thanks to everyone who organised the day and thanks Tony for showing me the right line to use on the corners for my first 2 sessions, also the wet last session was fun and sideways:eek: P.S good luck in your first race ! :) Paul the best day ever until the next one!:D :D

Welcome aboard Victor! :D I did have some concerns that the GP circuit had too many straight bits to be fun - but how wrong was I? :D Hmm - the moisture certainly made things 'interesting' - spun twice in one session thanks to the changing conditions, must apologise to the poor soul who had ring-side seats to both of those occurances... :o Now all I have to do is seek out the cause of that annoying suspension-related vibration that causes the instrument binnacle to oscillate at 110mph...

My first track day for getting for 3 years and boy was it worth the wait.. Fantastic day, well organised. I'll have to bring up the subject of overtaking at the next committee meeting, despite all the mention of it in the briefing, one or two people were still very reluctant to let people past and even when they did they occassionally forgot they had and on one occasion ended up with me on the rumble strip on the start of the pit straight at 95mph with heart in mouth! When you let someone overtake - stay on the right, do not move over onto the 'racing line'! doh. Otherwise, fantastic day :D Can't wait for the next one.

Fantastic Day, Thanks Dave & Team Just like to endorse everyones comments, best track day I've ever been on, well organised, friendly and ran to time. Just like to pay extra thanks to my fellow novices, believe it was only session that ran without stoppages and everytime we started out on track, the rain cleared up! Can't believe how tight and twisty the GP circuit is, anyone know a "downforce" mod for a TF? Superb, see you all again soon Phil O. :D :D :D

I gather that a fellow MGoT member may have bought a couple of TF front splitters that may be of interest - certainly less drastic than the VHS Sprint car solution! LOL

I've just added a load of photos to the gallery for Martin Woods. Unfortunately they are credited to me so bouquets and brickbats to Martin please.:D I'll add some of my own later. Just added mine. The files with DSC... filenames are Martin's, the CRWs are mine. I have resized them to 800 X 533 pixels but if anyone wants a higher resolution copy just ask. Email me at norman @ law-family.org.uk (remove spaces) with the filename(s) and I'll send them. High resolution means large files, be warned.

Taking a deep breath for a couple of days, I'm already craving for the next track day :) Now I understand why it's so easy to get addicted :D I was wondering how slow (or fast ;)) I was going compaing to other Fs  No idea about lap times of course, but I remember getting no more than 110 mph towards the end of the Hangar Straight (on the speedo). Just out of curiosity - what sort of speed would be "proper" for an F VVC there?
Can't believe how tight and twisty the GP circuit is, anyone know a "downforce" mod for a TF?
As Rob noted, I bought a small number of TF splitters from the S&R auction. These splitters only fit TFs built from 2004 onwards. We will be offering these sprayed and fitted once our business is up and running. Once we have spoken to the people that will be spraying the splitters we will have an idea of how much we will charge fo these. Ralph

Definitely a good day:D I think the controlled release of cars from the pitlane at the start of a session was by far the better option, it gave everyone more room right from the start. Definitely something to do on the return visit at the end of the year, unless everyone else disagrees?? Can someone who had been on the gp circuit before tell me if there was a head wind on hanger straight. I'd expected to be going faster.... Now I've just got to sort out howw many more MGoT days I can get to. Dave

I also thought the staggered release from the pit created much more space. Thanks to all those involved in organising the day - Well done. PS: Thanks also to Norman and others who have posted photos. :)

Tongue-In-Cheek
Can't believe how tight and twisty the GP circuit is, anyone know a "downforce" mod for a TF?
Thanks for the suggestions, ref options for the TF, I don't think my version, the 135 can afford to lose any more "horses" judging by the straightline speed of some MG's at Silverstone. This comment was just tonque-in cheek, I was just marvelling at how a circuit that was once renowned for being the fastest in the world, is now so difficult to drive in a normal car without the front pushing or the 'tail stepping out', especially woodcote. You see the F1 cars going round at GP time and it's like they're on rails, not even an inch off line! I now understand why they say they could overcome gravity and drive along a tunnel roof, there's so much downforce produced. If I was thinking about having a downforce mod, I quite like the idea of those huge fans they banned from F1 (an Alfa?), might keep more cars behind me on track! Phil :D :D :D

I.T. Dave, which is very dull. I have to quote revs as my speedo no longer works. Well, to be fair it bounced anwhere between around 85 and 120 several times whilst accelerating. Mr Breen is always on the sniff for top speeds at trackdays, I think he is keeping a league table :)
06/04/2006 12:19:36
v8dave
Tony, My initial reaction was that while 6800 in top was valid info I have to know quite a bit about your car to get a number in mph - I've assumed a 3.9 axle;) So the result seems to be that silverstone gp is barely faster than the national circuit. Fastest I've seen so far is at Bedford as you approach the chicane on the back straight - the speedo needle got to the E of main beam:eek: O.T. - how was silverstone on the 1st, is fifth in class good or bad by your standards? Dave

The track was 'mildly moist' to use a JCism. I wasn't spending a lot of time looking at the speedo - more on the track! These days are not for timing and checking maximum speeds (that would void the insurance), they are about pitting yourself against the track. However, on one ocassion that I did look at the speedo it read a tad over 100mph. My speedo is not overly accurate at the top end, and has a bit of a delay. Based on previous callibrations that I've done with a GPS system, I reckon that that equates to around 110mph. Mr. Breen is into doing 1/4 mile runs in his stripped out ZS180.

Corners in order of driving pleasure: Bridge Club Corner Copse - 90mph =8O could go faster....! Luffield I could do the section Club into Bridge all-day-long, it's just superb. Tim

Midget madness OK heres a lap with 55bhp Copse entry 70mph lift then flat out to beckets complex lift through thte first two then 3rd then flat onto hanger straight check the mirrors - point and move over. 85 - 90 on approach to Stowe, brake, third for Vale flat till abbey, Brake, third flat all the way under the bridge brake and third for left hander (can't remember the name is it luffield) hang on check the mirrors - point and move over. Cheers Barry

My speedo was registering about 130mph down hangar straight but its probably way off although with 247rwhp its probable. The really strange thing is that I can get a higher top speed at Castle Combe where there aren't any straights to speak of !! I like the GP circuit but its not my favorite. Mark
The really strange thing is that I can get a higher top speed at Castle Combe where there aren't any straights to speak of !! Mark
I can't let you get away with that! If you take the right line, then from Camp corner through Folly to Quarry Corner (or at least to Avon Rise) it's really one long straight :) . It just depends on how fast you come out of Camp to start with.....:D :D :D
06/04/2006 18:08:42
d.breen
thats surprising that you get a higher top speed at combe ,although it all depends on the speed you can carry through the corner onto the straight doesnt it,certainly from camp to quarry is a long time at full throttle:cool: i like combe but the lack of run off is a bit daunting ,especially last time i was there with the scooby forum on a day when it rained hard all day:eek: 4 wheel drifts at high speed with only a few yards of grass before the wall is interesting!! 120 seems to be about my top speed on track at donington and combe, thing is once up there it takes such a lot more straight to accelerate even a couple more mph. As ralph says i go to santa pod sometimes but track driving is my first choice . p.s tonys just having a nibble cause i wupped his butt at donington:rolleyes: phh slicks who needs em:D

:D@ Breeny. V8dave, I still have the 3.9 diff but you are right, it didn't seem much faster than say the end of club straight on the national circuit. Fifth was ok. I had hoped to be a little nearer the front at the end but it shows that the car needs a few more tweeks. (And me as well no doubt). I was running with a cracked head as well, which is now being replaced with a larger valved version in time for June (I'm missing two races due to a baby). Peter just drove right past me on the s/f straight which was suprising! The car was moving around quite a lot and needed a more delicate touch, so I suspect the lay up through winter hasn't been kind to the compound either. Anyway, enough excuses, must try harder! I always do a race report under the 'racers diary' on the website in my signiture, including a link to the video from the car in case anyone is interested.
These days are not for timing and checking maximum speeds (that would void the insurance), they are about pitting yourself against the track.
Quite right too Ralph... But then this is just a mild case of "mine is faster than yours":D Us racers just don't know when to stop competing. Tony, it was interesting to see that I would have been third in the Cockshoot if you look at my Total Butler race time. I have to agree that the winter seems to have degraded the tyres a bit. Dave

Aye, no racing on trackdays. But that doesn't mean you can't play 'Keepie uppie' :D

I was getting an indicated 115 - but that's with the roof down, so the car tends to hit something of an aerodynamic brick wall by these kinds of speeds. The other difficulty was actually trying to read the darn speedo. There's a vibration somewhere in the suspension (tyre related?) which hit the resonant frequency of the instrument pack (which has two broken brackets at the moment) which meant that the gauges were somewhat blurred at these kinds of speeds!!!! An MGB 1800 turbo? That explains why you were so nippy! Nice one!!! Hmm - time to supercharge methinks ;)

Who's got the MGB turbo? I've a tuned 1950 MGB and Dave's a 3.9V8...

A 1950? Wow - that engine was performing extremely well Tony :) Do you know what power it's making? :D Spotted that Scholar do 1.9 litre K-series blocks from 350 notes... now that is tempting. Then add a supercharger. A receipe for spending lots of £££ methinks, but what an engine that'd be. Oh dear. Daydreaming again!
08/04/2006 20:28:34
Tony Crossley
Not enough judging by the race! I was quite interested in the thought of a turbo charged B series though... I've uploaded a lap from the camera I had in the car. I only used it for a session, and some of it was no good due to rainspots sending it out of focus. Anyway, there are a few cars in here, includng the two V8 GTs - check out the speed of the V8blokes down hanger straight. Wow!
I've just been offered a ZT 385 engine, complete with Rousch supercharger! Do you think this would fit in a B? :D
From memory the ZT engine is a ford unit which is rather large and heavy. The chevy LS1 and 6 units are apparently almost the same size as the Rover V8. Try looking at this site http://www.chevroletls1.com/index.html Dave
13/04/2006 12:30:05
Ralph
I thought it probably would be too big (not that I was really considering this mod to my B). The car might be a bit nose heavy, and I'd have to upgrade the brakes and suspension. Some better tyres, to get all that power down on the road would be in order, as well...

Do you guys get "Practical Performance Car"? It seems the spiritual successor to CCC - it even has Dave Walker writing in it! In the most recent edition I've got it talks about that LS1 mill - in the context of junking the Lotus slant four in preference for it in a S1 Lotus Esprit. Madness of course. But really, really, REALLY tempting... Ugh - must pinch myself and stop day dreaming!!!
