Dave
After the success of the Beginner Evening at Donington, we're trying to firm up another evening - currently proposed for Friday 5th August. This will be a shared day with Lotus on Track (LoT) and will run in three sessions: 1. Beginner's session - mixed LoT and MGoT 2. Experienced session - LoT 3. Experienced session - MGoT We've still to finalise pricing, but it may be slightly higher than the Beginner's evening to accommodate a slightly smaller number of cars per session - somewhere between £60 and £65 for 25 cars per session. All still to be confirmed. If you are interested please email me at Dave@Mgs-on-Track.com Currently interested: Dave Livingstone, MGF Matthew Wrigglesworth, MG Midget Mike O'Leary, MGB GT V8 Nick Ashmore, MGB Paul Stirland, MG ZS 180 Carl Roder, MGB GT Neil Stothert, MGF Michael Watkins, MGB GT Steve Owen, MGB Gavin Jewkes, MGB GT Paul Rigg, MGF Ian Lloyd, MGF Roger Davison, MGB Bill Sharp, MGC Mike Hankin, MGF
stick us down for a place ,not bothered which session ,,how much track time will we get then?
Hi Dave, It'll be as we originally planned for the beginner's evening i.e. 20 mins per hour, which should give you an hour on track between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. I'll add you to the list and get back to you by email once we've finalised the details. Cheers, Dave

Dave, I'm also interested in this one, but will need to work out the logistics of getting there in time... BTW, it might be worth separating the list into beginners and experienced. That way people will know whether there are still spaces available in the relevant group. Hopefully, some of the people that we signed up over the weekend will join us out on track.

Dave, what are the noise limits on this. I could be tempted to bring the racer down - with a passenger chair fitted if anyone is feeling daft enough to go for a ride.
Dave, I'm also interested in this one, but will need to work out the logistics of getting there in time...
OK, let me know as soon as you can.
BTW, it might be worth separating the list into beginners and experienced. That way people will know whether there are still spaces available in the relevant group.
Yes, I'll do that as we get near to filling a session.
Hopefully, some of the people that we signed up over the weekend will join us out on track.
Yes, let's hope so. I sent out a welcome email to them yesterday. Thanks for your help - I hope you had a good day, despite having the worst day for the weather!
Dave, what are the noise limits on this. Also, is the race car road legal?

Hmm 98 - I do get 98db at some circuits - but a bit more at others.....Depends on the wind I think! The race car is taxed! Bizare but true. Do they want to see MOT's etc? Not normally something I've encountered on other trackdays.
Dave, what are the noise limits on this. I could be tempted to bring the racer down - with a passenger chair fitted if anyone is feeling daft enough to go for a ride.
tony i would come out for a ride mate;) will you be there for the evening even if you not taking car?

Dave
Hmm 98 - I do get 98db at some circuits - but a bit more at others.....Depends on the wind I think!
OK - sounds promising. Donington's noise limit is drive-by only - they have no static test.
The race car is taxed! Bizare but true. Do they want to see MOT's etc? Not normally something I've encountered on other trackdays.
That's great - the MOT check is something we (MGoT) impose to simply determine road legal status and give some indication of roadworthiness. So, it sounds like you could be OK - do I put you on the list? I'll need to insist on a passenger ride as well though ;)

Tony, Bring the racer down, will be a good evening. I will be there in my blue GT, I can't be bothered to tow the racer all that way, infact I only ever use it at Castle Combe. I will also get the vid cam in the car as at Castle Combe, so we could stage a good bit of footage. Joe

100db drive should be ok, it gets 98 at the static tests, pop me down then. Can I go out in the LoT session as well - I like scaring Exiges :p

For what it's worth, I have a teenage daughter too, so I have some idea of the pressure you're under. :)

can i go in the experienced session please,,ive done combe as well now apart from donnington and was quicker than most at both,,,i'd sooner be the one having to move out of the way occasionally than be constantly waiting for folks to move over for me because sometimes they are in a world of their own and you sit there lap after lap cause they dont indicate to let you pass.

heh, I think I'll need a new exhaust before this event. I got 98db at castle Combe, 100db at Rockingham, and now 101db at Oulton park. I think the stuffing has been blown out (again), proberly somewhere around castle combe :D Oops, also, do I need to screw my number plates back on so it looks more normal (ha!) and do you have any of those MGs on track stickers? I'll try and advertise for you on the crusty old club circuits of the UK.

nope i havent had any instruction chap in the car on track and no doubt it would benefit me but i raced karts for a couple of years and as far as i can tell its all pretty similar,,ie track awareness of other users, what all the flags mean ,racing lines ,braking zones ,cooling down laps ,driving in the wet(ive even driven in snow on track!!!!!!that was fun),,,,obviously on track im not racing and you cant dive about like you can in a kart but its a good foundation. If i need to have some instruction to satisfy you though i can do that ,,i aint above being taught something. Im sure Tony c can vouch for how i drive hes seen me at both, donny and combe and i remember letting him past at combe in his v8 more than once!!!

I'll sort out the groups based on the final list of attendees. We'll only have two groups and so it will be a case of simply splitting the list into two - a faster car/more experienced driver group and a slower car/less experienced driver group. I always take account of people's preferences where possible. Additionally, we always have the option of swapping on the night if anyone feels in the wrong group. Leave it with me :)

Dave, definatley up for this now, I've sourced a new silencer -the other has clearly blown out all its stuffing and is getting louder. Also sourced a replacement gearbox as the other one packed up in the last few races. Anyway, do I send a cheque onto you? Payable to whom? Is there an FAQ for the thick? Tony
Dave, have you sorted out who is in which group yet?
Hi Shawn, We've got 11 absolute beginners - that is, never been on track before - more than I expected. That leaves just a couple of places left in the beginner's session as we're sharing that session with the Lotus guys. Then I have one person with a 2nd driver who is an absolute novice. So, it looks like most people who have just done the beginner's evening last month will have to join the experienced group! I know that was what you wanted anyway. I just hope it's OK with everyone else.

So, it is just a question of getting out of your car and into someone elses in the pit lane. Shouldn't prove too much of a problem. Regards, Dave
Dave, I've only been on the track once before (at the last beginners evening) and my dad who is the 2nd driver has never been on the track before...... What group would i be likely to be in? Cheers Gavin
Hi Gavin, Sorry for the delay in replying. I've been struggling with sorting out the beginners session, as I have 13 places and 11 absolute beginners. This leaves just two slots for those of you who were on the evening in May. Both you and one other person from that evening have second drivers who are absolute beginners. So, this fills the 13 places with the least experienced participants. I'm hoping that other people who have only been on the beginner's evening in May are going to be happy to run in the experienced session. Fortunately, most of the experienced people are 'regulars' and should be sympathetic to the situation. Neverthless, we'll make it very clear in the briefing that the experienced group is really quite mixed.

Dave, it should be ok so long as the experienced people drive sensibly and give people a little respect, and those a little less experienced watch their mirrors regulalry and give room when needed. One thing I noticed when riding around last time is that a fair few people do not give the car in front much respect in regard to braking. IE, they may be the last of the late brakers and presume the car in front is also. This results in them charging up very close to the car in front and being suprised when it brakes 50 yards sooner than they expected. This led to a few almost locked wheels, exciting moments when I was there last. It may be useful to focus on that aspect in the briefing as the group will be more mixed than normal. If anyone is going to get tangled up due to a disparity in experience and ability it will be here - probably at the final chicane just before the start/finish.
Is that you Michael? I always struggle to match these forum names to real names. Sorry to hear about the B. It's the MX5 then? We'll forgive you just this once. :D
Yes, afraid so. If anyone sees a copy of the latest (just out) issue of Classic and Sportscar magazine, you can see our black BGT on the right of the picture outside Coventry Transport Museum. You should have seen the pool of oil we left there. We were mopping it up with swarfega handwipes. The oil is coming from one of the breather plates on the side of the block. I've had the carbs and manifolds off again since to effect a cure, without success. I was hoping to have another go this week, but I've been putting 14 hour days in at work, so I'm just too knackered to have another go. I'm afraid I've found at my age, if I'm tired, I can't work on the car succesfully, the old brain just won't work properly and I end up just making things worse, so I'm going to leave it until this weekend now. So that leaves me either our VW tdi automatic or the MX5. I supposie it'll be the 5. Its a pity 'cos I still haven't driven my B around Donnington yet. Hey ho. Mike.

Thanks to all who helped organise a terrific evening, it was great fun. Apart from when I spun down the craner curves. Sideways downhill on the grass at about 80 was a bit worrying. And i'm sure I could hear sniggering from the MG's as they passed the sight of an MX5 beached firmly in the gravel. Seriously though, I do apologise for spoiling the second run for the yellow runers, all my fault, feel bad about it. Only damage seems to be a broken door mirror glass, from flying gravel I presume. Sorry to see the mint Midget hit the wall, but when he did get out on the track, boy wasn't it fast! And the T-Type, that was a flier too, and it was nice to be passed by a great BGT towards the end of the last session. Was it a V8? Naturally, I hope it was. ;) Great handler as well. Great watching it romp past a 160 Elise. So thanks Dave, and to all your crew. Will do my best to get my B out next time.

I've never been in an MGC before, what a great noise that engine makes, thanks for the trip Bill. :) Neil

Very enjoyable evening, although a shame we had a higher than average number of incidents. Track wasn't very grippy last night, some sections seemed to covered in dust for most of the evening after the bike trackday. They must have been corner cutting a lot. It was nice to have a circuit to stretch the B's legs on for a change, hit around 120 several times each lap and got 115 at the apex of craner so quite pleased. Hope my passengers enjoyed it! (4 cylinder race car. Blue+white stripes) I'm useless with the video though, first session I didn't have the camera on and it ran out of tape about 10 minutes into the second session. Bah :o Gavin, I'd be interested any pictures you migth have got, BGT, number 42 - no number plates! Ta. Tony

i was maxxing 4th at 116 mph and having to go into 5th up to almost 120mph on the straight under the tyre bridge but that head wind was really holding us back ,,,,,strong wasnt it!! Your car certainly handles tony,, i could only push 110 in craner at best i think,,we were putting some quick laps in!! You want to see the state of my front left ,,its only a month old and is now on the back.

Just a quick apology to everyone for not arriving until 4.20pm! I guess most of you know that the M1 was severely disrupted, which made an unusual start to our evening at Donington. Hopefully, the rushed start didn't detract too much from the fun of the evening. As Tony said earlier in this thread, there were an unusual number of incidents, both breakdowns and 'offs'. Thankfully, the MX5 survived and the poor Midget was still driveable, if battle scarred :( I did find it a bit slippy and at least during the first session found that my tyres were squealing, which they normally don't do. I hope the two MGFs were recovered by their respective breakdown services successfully and their owners got home OK. Two very unusual failings - the first with a jammed gearbox and a strange clutch fluid leak; the second with low oil pressure. Thankfully no head gaskets! Do let us know how you get on with the diagnosis and repairs. Were there any others in this event packed three hours? I noticed some heavy oil burning going on around the track by at least one MGB! Anyway, I'm glad that most of you seemed to have a good time. Thanks to whoever moved the weather front through and got us a pleasant summer's evening :)

Nervous Laughter
Many thanks as always to Dave and his fellow organisers for their efforts in making an enjoyable evening for everyone. Donnington is indeed a GREAT circuit ! It was a shame that the first 2 MG sessions were cut short by incidents of people off track and I sincerely hope that both drivers were nothing more than a little shook up. However at the grave risk of becoming very unpopular, (and having thought all day about whether or not to say anything or not), I have decided to voice my opinion (for what it is worth) that I felt very disappointed with regard to some of the driving last night as I found it somewhat selfish. To my mind, a track day is all about FUN and is not about being on the ragged edge of the laws of physics all night and thereby making an incident and resultant stoppage inevitable. A stoppage due to a mechanical breakdown is one thing, a stoppage due to someone overstepping the mark is another. If the ragged edge is your thing then perhaps racing is a more fitting environment. Each stoppage is not only wasting other people's hard earned money but also risks getting the club a bad reputation for it's members driving standards. One official last night was far from impressed. The 3rd session was much better despite being the last often banzai run and I enjoyed being able to get into a good rhythm - right up until 2 laps from the end when I had a car come up the inside of me at Craner just as i was about to turn in for the apex !! The art of being fast is to be smooth and in control as many of the regular drivers last night demonstrated and as such are an example to the rest of us. In my humble opinion we did not display the usual high standards that MGoT normally exhibit. Anyway thanks for listening, have said my piece so now flame away ! Steve

little offs are part of track days ,,thats the risk you take and nobody plans to go off,,,if you want to go on a trackday to drive only reasonably quickly you need a strictly beginners session ,,i go to learn what my car can do at the extreme,, however ive never yet had an off but i know it can happen even if going only moderately quickly things can still crop up ,,,,having said that i respect the other drivers and i dont pass until indicated to do so even if sometimes its very slow coming. my apologies if my overtaking was thought innapropiate by anyone(grey zs 180)but im sure i was abiding by the rules can't speak for others.

Thanks once again must got to the MGoT team for organising another great trackday! Pity I missed the first session, due to traffic on the M1 (and work colleagues) I was just gettting to grips with my new suspension as the final session ended.

I didn't really have any issues with any other drivers which i was quite pleased about as i had only done 1 previous trackday but was in the experienced group(my 2nd driver had never even been on a track before!) I found i was able to indicate pull over on the straights as per the rules and let all the experienced drivers fly past and then i could carry on at my own pace and i can honestly say i didn't experience any dangerous overtaking by any of the experienced drivers:)

Thank for another great time. I was a bit concerned with all the rain we had in the morning, but as it turned out Dave had booked the sun again for us ;) even if it was a bit breezy. Didn't have a problem with the quality of the driving, after all you need to find the limit at least once to know where it is  I passed the silver F with the gearbox problems parked up on the verge just past the main entrance to Donnington, with the driver on the phone so hopefully he managed to get a tow home. Definitely something funny about the track though, tyres where squealing at almost every corner, and even under breaking at some times. Could have done with the last session being another 20 mins longer as it was the only session I really felt happy behind the wheel. Managed to get into that nice place when there was nothing behind me and nothing in front so managed to have a real play and try out a few new lines and techniques :D

Thanks Gavin, the bonnet is just a fiberglass skin held by four clips, and at speed the airflow makes it bend upward in the centre quite a lot. A lot of people thing I've had a shunt on the front end! Dave, in that final session we were really flying. I was certainly making more of an effort to maximise traction whereas before I was having a bit of fun. I had also found I could use 4th gear through old hairpin (bottom of craner cuves), just turn in a bit earlier, strong throttle and let it drift through, maybe with some opposite lock - at about 80mph. It really carried speed up the hill then. It takes me a while to build up to speed so it would have been nice to have driven all day. I'm pretty confident that by the next session I would be able to take craner absolutly flat - in that final session I was doing a slight life (for confidence really - didn't loose much speed). That would be around 120mph. I'm pretty sure your ZS could be similar. I was steadily moving my braking points forward as well - it was a little hard to judge with a passenger in - a passenger adds about 8-9% to my cars total weight and has a marked effect on its performance. I was braking too early still for Redgate, and up to Gerards. It was nice to follow you around, from my vantage point you looked to be a very smooth and considered driver. You were not fighting the car and were maintaining a really good pace. Consistent too. As for driving standards, well the track was inconsistent, with strong grip in parts and little grip in others. The chicane at the end of the lap was poor all evening, my car understeered and oversteered on entry and exit, whereas last time I was there the grip was so high that I was lifting a front wheel on entry. That wouldn't have been happening last night. The speed differential between gripping and slipping at the limit is only around 5mph so it is very easy to be caught out from one lap to another - and we did have a large number of beginners in the experienced session that would have been easily sucked into using more and more speed. Perhaps a little more than they would have done had they been out with slightly slower cars. Tony

I second Steve & Tony - there was significantly less grip than I've had on other days, got closer to a gravel trap than I've been before and was surprised at the amount of tyre squeal, I've used the same tyre setup here before and I don't remember them grumbling that noisily. I usually enjoy the chicane into the pit straight but didn't get a single 'tidy' one, and still I'm not using the considerable grip through the Old Hairpin to its full. But, what a way to start the weekend, eh? Spread the word, let's get a few more people and then the next one can be exclusively MG, with 3 groups there'll be much less issue about people pushing their way past. The physical length of the circuit means you can find it frustrating waiting for one of the straights, but the only occasions I saw overtaking without the 'consent' having been particularly visible were when the slower car didn't appear to be aware of what was going on behind them, namely a car closing up on them, and had allowed a safe overtaking opportunity to be missed, sometimes two or three. If F1 drivers can maintain awareness around here, us mere mortals should be able to queeze in quite a few checks of the mirrors between bends... Looking forward to the full day immensely, will be booking some instruction and hoping Dave's request for sunshine gets actioned - otherwise I can foresee a potential mishap as I progressively up the pace through the Craner Curves, the back was hinting it wanted to go every time I tried to stay flat. Neil, I didn't realise your misfire had prevented driving, good luck tracking the gremlin down. My temperature gauge was only showing a reading for a few seconds per lap, must get that sorted... ________ Cm Series

Well, Mister Nervous Laughter, I'm sorry if I wasted some of your hard earned money while you missed 30 seconds of track time. I was the unlucky driver of the Midget who pointed out to everyone how slippery the chicane was. I had followed the pace car round without any problems, as he peeled into the pits, I accelerated, and the rear stepped out and caught me by surprise. I tried to catch it, but the car fishtailed until the rear wheels hit the grass. It then hit the wall. Maybe if I had been going into the corner at normal speed, it would not have happened. Over exhuberance, inexperience, call it what you will. I am not the first person to go off there and I certainly won't be the last. I did no harm to anyone else and was uninjured. If you lost a pounds worth of track time, I apologise, and if you send me your address, I will send you a cheque. Whats another pound on top of my bill? I am gutted at the damage, but I go to these events knowing that it is a possibility, it's a risk I am willing to take. Though I try and drive within my limits, it's difficult to know what your limits are. I have learned a lesson, and in future I will feel my way in a little more. I personally felt the standard of driving was good and relatively safe. It is my second track day at Donnington, and it was more slippery this time, even though it was damp last time. I had another 1/2 spin at the corner at the top of the main straight, and on the last session down the craner curves, myself and an MGF behind me were up behind a slower MGB. He looked across at us and pulled over to the right, we took it as he was letting us past, and I apologise for coming up the inside and making him jump a little. Otherwise it was a good night apart from the obvious. I figured it will be a while until I am driving the car again, so I may as well make the most of the evening. It was a dodgy drive home though. The car will need to go on the jig to pull the floor straight. It needs a rear wing, rear panel, filler panel around the boot lid, one rear lamp, and a silencer. Oh, and a coat of paint. Thanks to the rest of you for your understanding and sympathy on the night. And thanks for Tim for bringing his old T type. He was sandbagging for the first two sessions as he didn't want to risk a noise warning. I went out behind him on the last session, and he all but dissapeared!

Hi Shawn, I'm sorry to hear that the Midget will need some jig work and isn't just body panels. I know how proud you are of the car and how gutted you must be to see it damaged. I know it doesn't help to know this, but you are one of only three people I can remember (in three years) who have damaged their car on an MGoT track day. One of the reasons that we run MGoT is, of course, because they are safer for our 'pride and joys'. Being on track with fellow enthusiasts is what it is all about, and driving standards are usually very high. I was a little concerned on Friday night that we were rushed because of the traffic issues and because the Bike day was so busy. The briefings should have been earlier, tailored for two groups (experienced and one beginner) and had a little more focus on our MGoT standards. I'm unsure whether to continue with the evening format for these logistical reasons. Although our original beginner evening in May worked well, we were lucky in having the whole circuit to ourselves for just 38 cars and that won't happen again. I hope the absolute beginners from Friday won't take two red flagged sessions as normal! We rarely get a red flag during a normal day, let alone two in an evening. It did seem to be slippy and I'm really sorry that it caught you out in a place where he sustained damage. I hope you get the car back to it's former glory soon. Dave

Before the last Donnington evening I was watching the commercial track day. They were going hell for leather, out braking each other into corners, and driving like it was a race. I am glad to see that standards are generally much higher in MGOT, in fact if they were not, I would not take part. If I had involved anyone else in my accident, or if someone else had caused it, I would feel a great deal worse. Embarrassment was the worst part, closely followed by having to tell my wife. I've built the car once, I'll have to do it again.

Hi there Does anyone know how Emma got on with her low oil pressure problems. Fortunately Roy from Techspeed was there and she done the right thing by coming off the track as soon as the oil light came on.. Be nice to know how she fair'd as I think the garage who done the headwork on her car only 4000miles ago has a lot to answer for.. Also the ride height of her car had been set by the garage to "Monster Truck" I hope this doesn't put you off Emma if you get to read this and you get your problems resolved quickly Stu

Yea we did think of that Tim. The hydraulic lifters in the head definately were not getting any oil as it sounded like a gaggle of sewing machines. The car was left to stand for a good 45mins to an hour but it didnt improve. Roy is thinking possible blocked oil ways if the garage who carried the head work didnt flush the oil ways out properly, and a bit of swarf has thrown itself up with all the fast cornering.... Really gutting for the girls, their first track day too.. Stu

Gavin, If your brother has any shots of my damask MGB roadster I would be grateful. To Everyone Else, Sorry for the smokin' MGB, but I'd put a new rocker cover gasket on early in the week and it had a little leak right next to the very hot exhaust manifold. Tightened it up for the last session so I could see the cars coming up behind me. Only one spin to report (cold tyres), at the same point as Shawn but I ended up on the Ambulance / Recovery vehicle slip road. The T was beautiful to watch, I followed it around on the first session, it just glided around the circuit. Dave, Again, thanks for sorting out a great evening. I was very slippery, it could have been the heavy rain the night before. Regards Nick

Shawn, I hope that you get the car fixed without too much cost or bother. The track certainly seemed to be slippery - the circuit guide does mention about aviation fuel being dropped on the track from planes taking off and landing nearby. Maybe this was a contributary factor, along with dust on the track. Several people, myself included, put a wheel or two off track at Redgate.

Sorry to hear the car needs jigging. What a bugger. Of all the places to have a spin at Donington that is the worst for potential damage. I remember a trackday two years ago when a fella made the same mistake and took a corner off his Ferrari 348. Ralph- what video I got of the evening seems to feature a few cars going wide at the exit of Redgate, there was some cemet dust down from what must have been an oil or fluid spill from the bikes - alway makes things a bit trickier. I'm hoping I didn't upset anyone with overtaking or even closing speed. I am mindful that I'm travelling very quickly and I was a bit worried that I'd suprise a few people by appearing in their mirror very suddenly. In case anyone is unaware, all the photos are now up on http://www.trackphoto.co.uk This is a nice line for the blind corner (over the crest - before the final straight)

Tony, Just out of interest what spec is your engine? i might have some spare cash to throw at mine soon and need to know where to start.....its currently got standard twin su's k&n filters, tubular maniold + large bore single silencer system. Next step is head and cam?

My engine is a bit of a monster and I wouldn't recommend it for the road, 1950cc, high compresion, lightweight, flat top pistons, fully balanced, Different cam, modified, big valve head, weber 45 DCOE, rev limit of 7000rpm+ There are a couple of cams to go above the one I have and Peter has offered to do me a special on one of his race heads with very big valves, etc. Which will mean going up on choke size again on the carb etc. Your best bet is to ring Peter (as advertised on my front spoiler :D ), he will be happy to chat to you on the phone and advise on what you want. For a road car with more poke I'm pretty sure he will recommend a modified head - he does a large number in different tunes and they all work well. He might suggest a different cam, etc. It will depend on what you want from the car, and how much you have to spend. Normally when you buy a head, etc from him you will also get a free setup session on his roling road as well (very worthwhile). I have dealt with Peter for a long time now, with him doing a head for my car when I first started sprinting in 1996. Anyway, his number is 01773 520021, give him a buzz, he'll happily talk to you about what you want. Just let him know I pointed you in his direction. oops, info also at http://www.peter-burgess.com
