Hello everyone, I did my first track day in my TF160 at Goodwood back in October. Had a really good day so I'll definitely be back for more. One thing i noticed was my rear brakes got quite warm but the fronts were pretty much cold still after a 15 minute session. Is that normal for the 160 on standard pads or should i be checking the rears out for sticking calipers or handbrake cable? Haven't driven it much since October but i'm working on my list of winter jobs to do currently. Phil

Hi Phil, The rear brakes on the F & TF are pretty small pad areas compared with the fronts and especially so with the AP calipers on a TF160. So, what you have seen is pretty common; they all do that sir! Its not a cause for alarm, but you will find you go through rear pads much faster when the car is used on a track, so keep a good eye on the pad depth you have, especially before a track day. I don't know what pads you are using, but if you are likely to me a more regular track day driver, then it is worth looking at pads desigend for track and road use as they are better wearing and also better braking efficiency on the track. I, as do a number of MGoT members use EBC Yellowstuff pads which are great on track and absolutely fine for road use as well.

The rear brakes are prone to sticking and also catch a lot of detritus from the road, especially in the wet. They benefit from a regular strip and clean as well as what Nigel recommends - a regular check. Don't go too hard on the pad material at the rear in relation to the front. they won't work when cold on the road and on track, they can overbrake the rear and reduce handbrake efficiency in normal use. You might want to consider slacking off the handbrake for track days to make sure it isn't dragging.

Thanks both. Useful to know that the rears are going to work quite hard still. I had a quick look last night and the handbrake return springs are looking pretty clogged with dirt so I think a general clean up is in order. I'll see how I get on next year with the pads, they're looking about half worn currently so maybe a set of EBC pads would be a good idea when i'm re-assembling them. Given that I'm on the OEM pads currently I may go with Red Stuff first and see how much track driving I end up doing.

I've always used Mintex 1144s both front (on AP calipers) and rear (on VHS discs). They are great for track and road, but can be hard to find. Merlin Motorsport at Castle Combe will source them and provide mail order if you don't get to the circuit. MDB 1343 Mintex 1144 rear pads MDB 2027 Mintex 1144 front pads

Thanks Dave I've seen others recommending Mintex as well in the past. I suspect any of them will be fine for the Captain Slow that i am currently. More tuition still required to stop me backing off as soon as the instructor gets out of the car. Anyway I do get down to Combe a few times a year so i might have a look in Merlin when i'm there. Maybe I can even persuade them to give me a marshal's discount.
