Cheers Kev
Kev, Just got back from a great day at Brands, so I'll turn my mind to the next few events very soon :) The 25 cars will be our share of the day, which is being run by Lotus on Track - as last year. Also like last year the day will be open pitlane. Cheers, Dave

Too ambitious ? I would like some advice please ? I have provisionally booked a place at Bedford (which sounds a fantastic facility !), but am now wondering if this is a bit ambitious ........I see now that it is an open pitlane event and also from the entry list that there is going to be alot of fast machinery out on track.............and that is without the Lotus boys !! I have probably one of the slowest cars (Sprite) plus it will only be my 3rd track day, (the 1st was Silverstone last year and the 2nd will be Silverstone this year !). Despite the wonderful track courtesy that MGoT and LoT subscribe to, I would not want to "be in the way" of other drivers and put them and myself in a situation that might, at best, be unpleasant due to my slower car and very very limited experience upon track. Would I be better off sticking to the events that are run in sessions graded according to performance and skill ? I would be very grateful for the opinions of all please ? Thanks.

Thanks.
Steve, A very sensible question. Bedford is open-pitlane and as you rightly point out many of the cars will be a whole lot quicker than you. Ordinarily, I would tend to agree that open pitlane is better for the more experienced driver. However, Bedford is unsually long at 4.6 miles with huge straights. Overtaking is therefore very easy and no-one can be held up for even a single lap. I'd say that it is really down to your own confidence and that you don't need to worry about holding other people up. If you're happy to watch your mirrors and wave people through at every opportunity then go for it. It's a great circuit and an extremely safe one, as there are no armco barriers, very few gravel traps and plenty of grass run-off. Perhaps someone like Steve White can give you a better answer, as I think he was pretty much in your position last year at Bedford - perhaps even an absolute beginner at the time!

You called ;) Hi Steve, Dave is correct I did the MGOT trackday at Bedford last year, and it was the first one I had done (I had done a North Weald airfield day prior to it but that was a whole different kettle of fish). What you find with the open pitlane set-up is that at the beginning of the day there will be a rush by everyone to get out and get a few laps done. I found that if you waited for a bit, the majority of these car then came back into the pits, at which point I would leave the pits. It is possible therefore to get out of the track when it is quite, but as Dave said, there are plenty of places around the track to overtake or be overtaken. At no point did I feel under pressure to drive faster or that I was too slow. Everyone just takes it at their own pace and as long as you respect everyone else, abide by the track rules and allow faster cars to pass when safe you are guaranteed to have a great time, I certainly did. The open pit also has the benefit that you can come and go as you please, and for this reason IMO it is better than the normal session set-up. You can go out on track whenever you like, for as long or as short as you want. If you do go out and find there are a lot of faster cars on track, you can just come back into the pits and wait till it quietens down a bit. You also have the ability to go out with several other drivers if you wish to get the feel for the track (probably advisable at the start of the day). Also because Bedford is a private track and it is not used for competition, it has very few gravel traps or barriers, so there is little to hit if you do make a mistake. Most of the corners have large grass run off areas, and so do not damage your car if you have an off, ideal for beginners. I can also highly recommend booking an instructor session if it is available again this year, as it is well worth it and the instructor will tell you where you are going wrong and how you can improve. I enjoyed it so much last year I booked as soon as poss for this year, and Bedford is now my personal favourite track. Any chance of having 2 days this year Dave? Go for it, trust me you won't regret it :D PS. I have just ordered a new TF so won't be coming in the blue monster this year

My thanks to you both Dave and Steve for the advice and benefit of your own experiences. Bedford sounds a great facility and the points / tips about judging your time on track and the flexability of open pit lane are good food for thought.........I think that the excitement of the prospect of being there :) will PROBABLY overcome any trepidation, but I do still want to make sure that I am realistic about both my own abilities and also that of the car - I assume that you had the blue TF last year (?) so a lot more power and somewhat better handling than my frog ! :D Just one more question .......... I read that there are going to be 100 cars present, 25 for MGoT - are the other 75 places all going to be taken my LoT or will there be other groups present / places available to other types of cars please ? Many thanks again.
I assume that you had the blue TF last year (?) so a lot more power and somewhat better handling than my frog !
Yep though this time I will be in something else. power is not everything, skill pays a strong part and last time I was passed by many cars not as powerful as mine, but due to my inexperience they were faster than me. But by the end of the day I had gained enough confidence and learnt enough control that I was also able to pass cars more powerful than mine, so its swings and roundabouts really (I was plesantly surprised how much better the TF160 brakes are than those on a standard Elise ;), and I could easily close up a gap under breaking). I doubt there will be 100 cars, IIRC last year there was 25 MG's, 25 Lotus and a dozen or so 'others' ranging from Nobles & 9111's to VW estates, but Dave will be able to confirm. There is a limit on how many cars are allowed on track at any one time though, and the marshals will stop you exiting the pits if they feel its getting to busy. Look forward to seiing you there :D
It's LoT's day and so all the other 75 places will be from them - predominantly Elises. There are no other clubs involved. This is the fruit of an ongoing mutually beneficial relationship between LoT and MGoT :) Very few organisations get the chance for a dedicated track day at Bedford, so we're very lucky to share this day with LoT.

Go For it Like Steve I too was a 4 wheeled track day virgin at Bedford last year. I'd echo his comments 100%. I have to admit I was very nervous at the start of the day, but the spacious track and good track manners, meant I was pretty soon having an absloute ball!! :D Look forward to seeing you there!!

However, Lot's organiser is happy for us to have a couple of those 15 places. I already have two people who have asked me about this, so it'll have to be the first two or three who book and specifically request a 2nd driver that get the places. After that I'll have to refuse. Passengers, however, are not a problem.:)

Just to add a little more to what's already been said.... Bedford is an ideal track for a relative new-comer to mix with other cars. It's a huge circuit with plenty of space and some very long straights over which the speed freaks can do their own thing whilst others can carry on without feeling like they're in anyone's way. It's a great facility for seasoned vets and beginners alike. Just bring plenty of water (if it's as hot as last time) and something for lunch. Last year was superb. I notice Neil's at No 6 on the list in an MGF.....Is this the first outing of the "new" car?
