I've just noticed a section on the event notes for Brand Hatch - no excessive tyre squeel. Is this a new thing? I don't recall it being listed at Silverstone or Castle Combe. It sounds a bit excessive. What next, no excessive revving?

This is specified and measured differently in each case. They also have different rules for certain days and certain events, eg racing, testing, trackdays. These rules are reflected in the contracts that we agree with each circuit. In the case of Brands Hatch it includes excessive tyre squeal. It does not usually cause MGoT drivers a problem.

Hi Mark, Steve is right this is a peculiarity of our Brands Hatch contract, it has been in there for a number of years now. It stems from local residents compliants to the local council who grant the circuit planning permission to hold x number of race days, testing days, noisy & quiet track days per year. If a car is causing tyre squeel they hang a warning board out to the driver of the car causing the noise hoping they will moderate their driving style to eliminate the problem. If not they will be black flagged. Of note to you will be the fact that it is predominately front wheeel drive cars that cause this problem the most. Usually when the driver is pushing on in a corner and the tighter the corner the more it may happen. The car starts to understeer and the forces pushing against the tyre as it scrabbles for grip whilst being asked to speed up causes the squeel, basically it is crying enough. This can usually be eased by unwinding the steering a little, so less pressure on the side walls. It may help to lower the tyre pressure a little, so 1psi at a time.

Hi Martin that is all very interesting. So my owners manual says to increase tyre pressure by about 8- 10 psi (not got the book to hand) when driving over 100mph. I appreciate the pressure increases with temperature. What do you normally run your zs at to reduce the sequel.

The only place on Brands Indy you are going to get up to that sort of speed is the start/finish straight past the pits IMO. If you have been running pressures that high I'm not surprised you have squeal. I would think it makes the handling very twitchy as well?

Hmm maybe we should have had this conversation sooner ;-)

I am just going through the paperwork to produce our risk assessemnt and other documents for the day on December 2nd. In the MSV Private Use Track Hire Regulations manual, 20 pages, this is the relevant section on tyre squeal, Tyre Squeal MSV may, without liability to any Client or Participant: (a) issue a warning to any driver causing excessive constant or unnecessary tyre squeal; and (b) prohibit any driver from further participation if that driver, having received a warning, continues to generate excessive constant or unnecessary tyre squeal. MSV may invoke paragraphs (a) and (b) above in all circumstances where tyre squeal arises including where caused by mechanical faults, tyre unsuitability, incorrect suspension, and/or geometry set-up, erratic driving, excessive sliding and/or loss of control For the MSV may - read the MSV Duty Track Manager for the day.
