Hi all, Well the weather angel was sooooooo good to us today, end of October and I was in shirt sleeves all day :D . We hope you all had a great time out there today, certainly it was Glorious Goodwood at its finest. Sorry for the tardy start to the morning, I hope it didn't spoil your day too much. I have some thoughts about how we can improve on it for next year and I will be talking to Goodwood to see if we can improve our performance on getting things moving a little better. Thank you to everybody for pre-printing your indemnity forms and having them filled out, it really is a bonus for us. Barry Evens and Darren Burke, our two instructors today, asked me to pass on their thanks to all those who they instructed with today. They enjoyed sharing their knowledge with you as much as they thought you enjoyed receiving it. I know several people were taking pictures so I've put a gallery up here http://www.mgs-on-track.com/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/3124 We'd love to see your shots and share them with everybody, if you don't know how to upload your photos then e-mail me at martinc@mgs-on-track.co.uk. and I'll help get them up. Until next time, happy motoring :) Martin

A BIG THANKS TO COMITEE MEMBERS FOR AN ENJOYABLE AND WELL ORGANISED EVENT ! WELL DONE !! It was my first time at Goodwood and really enjoy the charm that the 'old school' race tracks have (bit like Castle Combe). The weather was absolutely fantastic and which I consider, perfect condition...Blue sky's, no wind and not too hot ! A very fast circuit, and again, I opted to stay on the 'black stuff', probably due to the lack of run off areas and the threat of having to pay £10 to Martin Charles's charity !! :) I had an afternoon coaching session with Darren Burke and worth every penny (although I'm not going to broadcast that as the spaces are limited !) I was impressed by the little tweeks he was giving to my driving style... and he was impressed (or so he said ;) ) by the fact I had not been to and driven at Goodwood before... but all that said, instruction is an absolute benefit to get maximum enjoyment from your day. As usual, I have taken some video footage and hope to have it on here very soon.

Big thanks to Martin and Dave for the organisation on the day - that and the weather (must find out who organises this bit so that I get it on holiday as reliably as MG's on Track seem to have it!!). We have been to Goodwood for the last 2 years, and this year was as good as it gets. Would echo Steve's comment about instruction - Julian and I had a session each in the morning and neither of us have had such a literally 'hands-on' instructor, ever! It was definitely 'you drive I'll steer'!! Fantastic way to show exactly where the correct lines are, but a bit unnerving at 90+ mph! Great day, just waiting for next year's programme now.
Just so everybody else is clear as too what should happen and the fact that we have discussed this with the instructors. The instructor should tell the driver he is going help with steering by aiding the driver with a hand on the wheel. Our four instructors this year, Barry Evans, Darren Burke, Bradley Ellis and John Norrington, tell me there are three reasons for this, 1. The driver is repeatedly not understanding the instructions given 2. The driver is unsettling the balance of the car by their steering inputs 3. The driver is constantly fighting the car through a corner There is a forth situation when they tell me they will grab the wheel without warning. That is when in their opinion the car and occupants are about to be involved in an incident. On a different note, so pleased to see the Minor out there again Richard, especially when you told me the engine was in bits still on Saturday. Look forward to seeing you and Julian again next year. Martin.

It was a combination of demonstrating the smoothest line through the corner, i.e. don't fight the car, particularly the double apex of Woodcote, and reinforcing the need to 'use all the track'. I was very aware of the briefing not to get on the grass and conditioned by normal road constraints, so was keeping 2-3 feet from the track edge. Barry made sure that we were very close to putting the outside wheels on the grass to show the full use of the correct line, which in turn uses all the track width. We have both had instruction in the past, but will remember Monday for a while to come yet! Great instruction sessions, would love to have the same next year.

Hi Martin ...Yes , you might have seen Dee with a camera but she thinks it is a Mobile phone so didn't try and take any piccies ...:p I like the comments about using ALL the track ... I had a session with an instructor and plead guilty to tipping the cone over at the exit to Madgwick ... Cant remember how many hands were on the wheel at that precise moment but it could have just been the turbulance as we went bye ...:o Roll on Goodwood 2011 ...:D

Brian, Lovely bit of video, that engine sounds superb and allows people to hear the technique of balancing the throttle through corners. I really enjoyed watching that, you have built one hell of an awsome car their. I see what you meant about that inside wheel spinning up on the exit of chicane and I think you said that was with an LSD in it  It just eats other MG's for breakfast, the blue ZR is Gary Dawson who is no slouch out on track and it looked like he was Sunday driving ;) But I didn't hear the swearing, is that on another session  I hope we can see you and the car again next year. Regards, Martin.

Last Monday was my first track day ever and I found the whole event really enjoyable - including the spin off at the beginning of my second session. :o That taught me so much and the remaining sessions went well and a big thanks to all who organised the day, including booking such great weather. Can't wait to do another track day very soon. P.S. I have just seen some of the great photos in the gallery. Is it possible to download one or two of these or are they copyright?

BEST WATCHED IN LARGE SCREEN WITH VOULME. 1st session out...seems a bit tame from the video, but the speedo WAS going well into 3 figures... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WH_AlviTEB4 This is the last session of the day. On board with an instructor after an afternoon of coaching. To show what a difference a litle instruction can do, watch the first video and then watch this one. A slightly different camera angle to show the speedo ;) There is approximately 3 seconds per lap difference between video 1 and video 2 ...amazing !...though still a tad off the pace of the SV !! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B13KpehxYA cameo appearence by Gary and BVZ, by request :p (the second video is only available via the MGOT link and is not public)

Had you have taken at leaast one instruction slot (of course they may have been sold out by the time you booked) you would have learnt so much more than you did from just having a spin. Regards the photo's I don't think it is possible to download them from the gallery and even if you could they wouldn't be of good quality, gallery photo's are low resolution. Under each picture is the user name of the person whose picture it is, send them a private message with the picture name in, that is in the grey box below the picture. I'm sure they would send you a copy. Regards, Martin.

I did notice that the instructor kept telling you to wait before you got back on the throttle and you seemed quite keen to get back on the throttle very early in the bend. This is generally a sign that you have enough traction available to be carrying a fair bit more entry speed.

Fair comment. This was my first time at Goodwood and the last session of the day. I believe I could have had more entry speed, yet thought it best to learn the lines at a 'reasonable' pace, and then build on that. I was aiming for consistency rather than out and out speed. You can learn a lot and at the same time very little in coaching sessions, It may have come across that I was keen to get back on the throttle, quite the opposite in fact, having got a better line after my coaching sessions, I was purely under the instruction of the Instructor. I think the main point is you can clearly see the difference betwen the 1st and Last session of the day and the benefits of Coaching / Instruction.
I enjoyed the second vid. How friendly are you guys? Extremely from my experience as a first timer and novice to Track Days. Martin very kindly e-mailed me some copies of his photos after I had asked about downloading them- thanks Martin. After contacting Roger "Shackleton" last week to ask if it was possible to get hi-res copies of the photos he took of me at Goodwood, he was so obliging that he posted me a cd disc of all his photos which are excellent! Thank you very much Roger. A friend came to Goodwood to watch and he was so impressed that he has now booked up for Brands next month for his first track day and I will be going to watch him. Whatever you guys are doing you are doing it right. Thanks again.

To offer track days that are "Safety Fast" and true to "MG - the marque of friendship" :D Yeah! I know cheesey, but I like it :o
