Been using Mintex 1177 pads on my MGF for some years now and I have been completely smitten with them (I know a few of you will have already heard me rant on about them in the past! LOL ;) ). They have a massive temperature range, meaning that they are effective from cold (perfect for road use), and simply get better and better when warm, and continue to work exceptionally well to extremely high temperatures (so ideal for track days). Trouble is that the pads aren't all that readily available for all MGs, and even for the F/TF ranges, the rear pads are no longer available  Very very frustrating. So I've done some asking around, and it is possible to have some new pads made up so long as we obtain a minimum order number - probably 5. If you are interested in obtaining some Mintex pads for your MG, please let me know here - which pads (front/rear) you're interested in and for what application (ZS/ TF/ Midget etc) If we get enough interest, we'll commission the pads and ensure supply :D
If you are interested in obtaining some Mintex pads for your MG, please let me know here - which pads (front/rear) you're interested in and for what application (ZS/ TF/ Midget etc)
As you know Rob, I had to bite the bullet and replace rear and then front pads within the last month or so. I went for Mintex 1144s again, but would quite like to try the 1177s that you have been so happy with. I'd need pads to fit both the standard rear MGF caliper and the front AP 4 pot caliper, as fitted to the MGF Trophy and MG TF 160. I'd be happy to buy in these in advance of my need - probably won't be that long once the 2005 track day season starts ;)

I'd assume that if Mintex manufactured pads in one material for a particular caliper that having a set of pads in the 1177 compound would not be a problem - I'll check on this... so we have a couple of takers for MGF rear pads, and one for Trophy front pads...

I just bought a set over the counter at brown and gammons a couple of weeks ago, have you tried them to see if they have any more available?? The set of EBC redstuff that were labelled up as fast road/trackday disappeared in the relatively gentle morning sessions at Donington. I'd originally put them in for Bedford and they worked really well there once they were warm. It's possible that they weren't getting up enough temperature to work properly at Donington, although the circuit does work the brakes pretty hard. The feel wasn't too great and the pedal travel was greater on the road. After changing back to the Mintex I now have a firm pedal and better feel, through horrible squealing noises as the pads bed in! Al

Neil Fry phoned them this week and was told that they'd all gone Alan. Of course, he could have been told the wrong thing, but none of the other usual suspects appear to have these pads in stock - and none appear to have any idea when the next batch will be made available :( I suspect that the situation is that no one is prepared to put in that minimum order to get the next batch remade. There is also some confusion since the original 1177 pad that we all know and love has been superceeded by the 1177/1. Different manufacturing process - but I am told that the pad will be indistinguishable from the original in terms of performance.

I'm interested in standard rear pads rob. Possibly two sets as they're hard to get hold of when you need them. Sticking with 1155s at the front (that fit 1970's era Loti and Jags!). P.

As suggested, i would like front and rear M1177s. I am currently running M1144s which seem very good but always after better braking. (wear far slower than EBC green stuff). I would probably get a couple of sets as once you need brake pads, you need brake pads. looks like you have to think ahead in this game. I think my Dad might be interested in a set as well. 2 sets of front and rears minimum for me than please (and if Santa or the Easter bunny wants to pay for them, that would be even better ;) ).

A set of standard front and rear 1177s please. Possible two sets depending on cost.

Current tally stands at approximately: MGF/TF: AP racing front: 2 240mm standard size front: 4 240mm standard size rear: 8 No interest yet (?) for other MG models. We have enough orders for proceeding with the rear pads, but we'll need more interest for the AP racing front pads before proceeding with that option... Folks, if you know anyone who may not yet have found this site and may want some suitable pads for their car, please do ask them. The more definite orders we get, the better the price we can negotiate. :)

Please increase my order, I have persuaded my Dad that he needs M1177s front and rear for his MGF (normal calliper size). From the Fry family, please make it 3 sets of front, 3 sets of rear pads.

Hi Rob, You can put me down for a set of AP fronts and standard rears. Mike

Okay, will do guys. Looks as though we are approaching the minimum number of orders for the AP racing front calipers - but I think we need to find another two or three to make this viable...

How about a post on the MGF BBS pointing here?

Me too please ! Having wrecked yet another set of EBC far too quickly - it is time to be converted to the gospel according to Rob ! ;) :D Please put me down for some 1177's for the following : 1 set for Std MGF front calipers 1 set for Std MGF rear calipers 1 set for AP front calipers Hope this helps with the order. Thanks very much.

Interesting: Questmead seem to think that B&G DO have sets of pads available for purchase - I'll follow this up, and see if I can't negotiate a discount for MGoT members. :) The AP racing pads are probably a special case - which I pursue once we have enough interest - we're nearly at that level - thanks guys. Raiph, I'd be more than happy to arrange a similar purchase of ZS pads: do you know of any other 180 owners who'd want to team up? Perhaps posts on the XPF and elsewhere?

Rob, YHM. My TF160 is going to need front and rears 'real soon now' (certainly before Brands in February). Norman

Well, the plot only seems to thicken, as having just spoken to Malcolm, it appears that B&G do not have any 1177 pads for the rear calipers. He's very enthusive regarding the 1166 pads - the ones that I'm also using at the moment. He's had some racing chaps back-to-back test them and the feedback has been positive. My own experience with them is much less categorical. I feel that they're not as aggressive as the '77s. Yes, some of my times have been faster than last year - but I've had a year on year improvement in the sprint championship anyway as I gain experience, so I can't derive too much information on that. What's probably needed is some testing with an accelerometer... Anyway, back to Questmead to see whether there is another source of pads... :(

Folks, I've spoken to Questmead. We can move this forward, but I'll need definite confirmation and cheques very soon. The pads will be manufactured from scratch, and will most likely take 3-4 weeks to be delivered. Minimum order number is 5 - so we've still not yet reached that with the AP caliper requests. About this, Malcolm reckoned 1177s would be far too hard. I would have to agree that this, as an option, is completely untested. If you order, you'll be trail blazing for the rest of us... and the pads may simply be too aggressive for the front end. It's your call guys.

Rob Wouldn't have been able to wait that long for APs. My rears started giving the dreaded screeching (warning) on Friday so have had to fork out £170 for a complete set, front and rear, of MGR replacements.

I'll be in touch with you all shortly regarding the pads - just as soon as I've received final confirmation on prices. Then we'll be looking at sending an order from 2 weeks of that date: we'll need the cheques by then please! Norman, do you want to order pads for future useage? I can't see these orders being made that often... Personally I'll be ordering 2 car sets front and rear in view of supply problems we've been having recently.

If this set lasts as long I might not have the car in 2 years time.

Mintex 1177 pads Guys, I just noticed this thread and wanted to know if you are still looking at purchasing additional sets. I recently visited Brands and got talking to Tim. he drove my car and suggested I uprated the rear discs....Not sure which ones he was suggesting and am waiting for his feedback - or if anyone else can tell me which ones....Then once I have the information I would be very interested in pads for the front to fit AP calipers and also a set for the rear (depending on which ones I actually need). looking forward to your response. Regards, Mark

Mark, Sorry for not getting back to you earlier but I'm not able to access my personal email at work and I've been a bit biz in the evenings. Sadly, we looked to purchase pads way back in 2004, but a very good source of bads and discs is Techspeed motorsport in the Leamington Spa area. http://www.tech-speed.co.uk/ Many of the hardcore trackday individuals sware by the guys at TS. One tip, don't rely on email, a telephone call is the best way to get through. Speak to Roy who will sort out a set of pads and grooved discs. I would also suggest getting something like 1144 or 1166's for the front but have a chat to Roy. With hindsights, one other thing your car would benefit from is four wheel alignment. Although many garages can do this they manly use laser equipment which might not necessarily be the best method, I would highly recommend a trip to Techspeed who have the experience of setting up the MGF cup-cars. Now, was there anything else you asked me.....? BTW, the latest on my car is that I have diagnosed the problem, so head off in the new year. Ho hum.... Oh yes the other questions Cams: Piper 633's sourced from either Dave Andrews www.dvapower.com or http://www.emeraldm3d.com/em_pricing.html Get a set of vernier pullies at the same time. Just a reminder... we have a Hunter 611 computerised 4 wheel alignment system in our workshop near Rainham in Kent. Our charge for this service is just £45 plus VAT. At the moment we cannot handle Fs that have been significantly lowered :(
At the moment we cannot handle Fs that have been significantly lowered :(
Perhaps as a short-term solution you should invest in the 'piece of string' technology that TechSpeed use :p :D ________ Buy Silver Surfer

Too late for the party? Only just joined the forum, so rather behind the power curve. Our TF160 is coming up for new discs and pads. Is there a good source for slotted/cross drilled discs and suitable pads? I just missed the cut :( for North Weald but hope to be at Castle Combe. Rgds, Paul Bryson

Rgds, Paul Bryson
Hi Paul, Sorry you missed North Weald, but if you still fancy coming along there may be a place for you. One of the guys who is booked in called me today to say he had flu and may not make it. If you want me to check in with him on Thursday evening then drop me an email (dave@mgs-on-track.com) with a suitable phone number to call you on. On the brakes. There are now cheaper options than the OEM 304mm discs. I went for EBC - you can find them on ebay from a number of sources, but I use a local supplier to me JRT Automotive - see their shop here JRT can also supply the pads I'd recommend also - Mintex 1144s although the link I've given you is a package of discs and EBC greenstuf pads for £149 (buy it now price). I've never used greenstuff as there were bad reports some time ago of them disintegrating with track use. However, I'm told that they have changed the compound they use since then. However, I'd stick with Mintex myself.
