Howdy all, Now I remember at Oulton Park there was a noise test before we went on track. I assume the same will be at Goodwood? At the time I had the standard backbox so there was no worry about it failing. Now however I have the Miltek SP and as of today my cat fell apart so it is decat lol. Is it possible the do the noise test and if it fails fit a new cat?

Goodwood are very stringent on the noise test issue:( In my mind they don't seem to check it properly as my exhaust normally records about 95+/- 0.5 db at every other circuit but at Goodwood they always say it's just in at 98.5db. The limit being 98db. If you are in any doubt you will be up there i would sort it before you go rather than being rejected on the day! Stu:D

Thanks Stu. I'm up there next weekend for a .org meet and we get three laps of the track during the lunch break :D Think I might see if they can do a test when I'm there to check. Certainly can't wait to get back on track! How's the car now?

You can fail the noise test initially and then go back and try again but you won't be allowed on track until you have passed. There is a local tuning company just outside the circuit where you can hire a bolt on rear silencer but they will charge you top dollar for the luxury! I would advise to get the car sorted prior to arriving at the circuit because sorting it on the day means the morning is a bit hectic with your sign on, briefing, sound test and then trying to sort the car. You may find hiring one of these useful, I can't vouch for the calibration but it will give you an idea of the ball park you're in..... http://bookatrack.com/-pp_Track-Day-Products.html?17 Hold it 1m away from the exhaust at a 45 degree elevation. Tim

With the cat on I believe it should pass the test easily enough :) I just love the sound without :D
You may find hiring one of these useful, I can't vouch for the calibration but it will give you an idea of the ball park you're in..... Tim
Thanks Tim. I'm going to try a few local places to see if they've got anything I could borrow and if not then I'll try Goodwood themselves next Saturday. If they can't help either then I will hire one of those. What was the revs that I need to hold the car at and how far away? Oulton was a year ago so I can't exactly remember  lol

3/4 max revs Is usual for noise tests.

I have a noise meter Dan, again calibrated 2 years ago so can't vouch for it 100%. Welcome to a borrow. Even easier if you want to come down to look at the Trophy turrets.

That would be perfect :D Thanks for the PM, i'll give you a ring after the weekend if that's ok to arrange something. Got my son this weekend so going to be rushing around after him on his bike lol

Goodwood noise test Just a comment, the last noise test I had at Goodwood was done approx 2metres from the offside of the car roughly in line with the air intakes (1500 Midget) at 4500rpm (from memory) on the same day a standard MGB failed the test. They really do have to keep the local authority on side (their track side noise meters are apparently monitored in the Council offices.)
They really do have to keep the local authority on side (their track side noise meters are apparently monitored in the Council offices.)
That is correct, IIRC they have 4 meters around the track, these are relayed real time into the Council Offices at Chichester. There is guy who lives in the estate over the back from St. Mary's who rings they the Council to complain every single track day. So understandable why they are so touchy about the static as well as the drive by. Incidently, although a noise meter test at home, work, etc. may show you are well in and give you guide as to how close you may be to the circuit limit, if the circuit meter says you fail, you fail and have to do something to satisfy the reading on the day. Frustrating yes, but a fact of life.

I had the same problem at Brands earlier this year which also requires a 98db limit. My MGB tests anywhere in between 102db and 104db. Demon Tweeks do an additional silencer, but it's quite expensive. I had a failed experiment with silencer wadding but found that about twenty pence worth of wire wool shoved up the tailpipe works a treat. Mines held in with some chicken wire. Just pull off a nice length, find a suitable sawn off broom handle and shove away. Fully adjustable as well! (patent pending!) Bit of a bodge, but reduced my noise down to 95db, not sure what it did to the performance however!

I was on a Jaguar track day two years ago when the whole programme was suspended for an hour by the Council because of excessive noise. The offenders had passed static noise test but blew the drive-by. Needless to say they were not too popular. One guy had brought his D Type across from France and was excluded because he couldn't get below the limit despite an extra muffler. If you live close enough the Goodwood marshals will give you an unofficial noise test to give you an idea if you are close to the limit. They checked my ZR last year and indicated it was well within the limit, but it is what you record on the day that counts.

Well I've stuck the new cat on now as I got fed up of the raspy noise and it's much deeper again now. Certainly a lot quieter so hopefully it will be ok. Wasn't picked up on last Saturday when we had three laps of the track but I guess they weren't really that fussed then lol

If so it is not really representative of a track day!
Hi Dan, Was this 3 laps behind the course car 50-60MPH? If so it is not really representative of a track day!
Yeah it was. Wasn't sure if they'd noise test us anyway as it was during the lunch break but all was ok. Just had a quick thought. The front screen says all medium helmets are sold out, will the track have any or will I need so source one from elsewhere? I can't remember if I was a medium or a large

It would be best if you email Barry McCann who will be the committee member looking after that day. He can then make the appropriate arrangements. Noise test and Helmets Dear all, Barry's Goodwood Noise test top tips numbers one, two, three and four: one; if you think you are marginal for the noise test please try and get your car sorted before the day. two; get your car hot for the noise test (for some reason it is quieter) three; depress the clutch when you run up the revs four; ease it up and ease it off when they say rather than stab at it - my midget loves to pop and fart on the overrun... Helmets - I will try and make sure we have helmets for all but do try and get hold of one from a friend if you can - the midget is not a very roomy helmet wagon. PLEASE NOTE: my Mgs-on-track email is so full of spam I have a new one barrymgsontrack@yahoo.co.uk Looking forward to seeing you all on the day. Cheers Barry

Barry in the past Goodwood have loaned us some helmets, can you ask them if this is still possible? If they say yes could I suggest we ask for 2 large and 2 Medium. Martin.

Noise test at Goodwood Beware the dreaded noise testers at Goodwood as i personally have been turned away for being to loud which meant a costly wasted day,get yours tested before you go and even if you are near the limit you may find that you are still to loud on their testing equipment ,it seems there is a great amount of difference from one track to another so never take it for granted what stands at one track may not be the same elsewhere ,castle combe being another very unprdeictable track:mad:

Starting to make me think I'd best bring the standard backbox in the boot ;) lol Has anyone here been to Goodwood with a Miltek fitted to a VVC F? The new cat is on now so hoping it will be ok.
Might be a good idea Dan and big wodge of steel wool, I know people who use that as well
Been thinking about the steel wool actually. Maybe sticking some between the downpipe and cat and putting a bit of wire mesh in so that it can't backfire up the pipe at all. What do you reckon? Should hopefully dull the sound down enough and shouldn't go anywhere during the day.

This will in some ways effect the running, especially on ECU controlled cars. With steel wool in the end this back pressure has the whole system to be absorbed in, with it up towards the manifold end it will build in the manifold and into the block. Only a small increase pressure I know, but it will be there. So I would only use this bodge myself up the tail pipe, also if it becomes clogged for any reason it will get blown out of the end, not into the silencer. Martin.

Dan Goodwood are a pain in the butt when it comes to noise testing. My exhaust comes in about 94.5db at most circuits but at Goodwood they always seem to reckon its 98-98.5db and I just scrape through. Personally i don't think they measure it at the correct angle and distance from the tail pipe but it's pointless stating this at the time as they will still fail you anyway.. Take some wire wool to be on the safe side Stu

Thanks Stu. I definitely need to do something then. So would what I suggested above be safe to do? If so then I'll stick it in on the Sunday before and drive to the circuit like it, do the track day and then take it out in the evening or Tuesday evening.

Bring the steel wool with you, if needed we will bung it up the end and take it from there ;) Also if you can fit it in bring your standard back box, just in case. Martin.

That was the reason I thought inbetween downpipe and cat.

I agree with Martin Dan Take a good wodge of wire wool with you, it will stay in if its squeezed in tight enough. But as Martin says you could take your oem backbox if you are really worried, but you will most likely miss the first session if this is the case if you are in an early group but better that than the whole day:D Stu PS The other choice if you have the time is to ring Goodwood and see if you can pop down before the day and get them to measure it, You will then know if you are too loud on their equipment and can fit the old exhaust before hand.

Hi Dan ..I saw a ZR160 have the exhaust stuffed with wire wool at Bedford a while ago ...Seemed to work ...:) Demon Tweeks also list some material for packing silencers ... Xpect it maybe too late to look at this option but might be usefull in the future .. See you at Goodwood ..Gary,Dee & BVZ ....
