Tim Guy
For the last two years I've run an MGF/TF servicing day through the .org forum. I'm not too frequent a visitor there at the moment but still keen to help people understand their F/TF and to be able to do their own routine servicing, swap experience of jobs done etc. This year I'm using this MGoT Pit Lane forum to organise the 'Who's coming' list. The day will be a similar format to previous years with hopefully something like 20-30 cars turning up. It is really focussed on people with little knowledge who want to learn but we need a mix of people who know how to service and people who want to learn to make this day successful. Anyway its a good excuse to get together and talk. Objectives :- 1) To encourage those that haven't, to get the access panel off their engine bay and find out just how easy it is to have a look-see. 2) To help and guide people through DIYing the basic servicing of their own car on the day and learn how to do those little MGF specific jobs. Oil change, Plugs, Leads, filters, disks, pads, brake fluid, lube, Gear Oil, etc. 3) To sort out peoples minor problems. 4) To help each other and pass on tips and demonstrations of those quirky MG proceedures. 5) To have a blast and get to know each other. Location :- My office Car Park, 10 Whittle Road, Dorset BH21 7RU. (Watch your spoiler on the little dip entering the car park). I'll open the office for tea making, shelter, lounging etc. Date :- 13th June from 9:00 until we've all had enough. We'll probably get a Barbie going at some point. If there are enough people staying over, no reason that this can't go on until quite late Do people want to bring their own stuff or shall we chip in and pop up to Sainsbury's. Tea, coffee milk etc will already be at the office but bring anything else you want to drink. We will have 240V Electric and Compressed Air but unfortunately the outside tap is no more so we're down to buckets for any detailing work. Tools:- Bring what you have or can fit into your MGF/TF. Helpful if you have axle stands. If you're bringing fluids ie oil, make sure you have something to put the old stuff in to take back home. I will bring a fairly comprehensive set including Manual, meters, OBD II scanner and a few special tools which you may borrow. - So long you put them back when you're finished with them. Liability - None. Its all at your own risk. If you bugger your car or someone does it for you - bad luck. Insurance - None Event Cost :- Nowt. Hope to see you there - Tim Guy

I'd LOVE to come along if possible!!! It would be so awesome to learn how to service my girl! Unfortunately I'm not really able to offer any MG related advice being a bit of a girly girl but can offer the following: 1) Fashion advice 2) Advice in reptile husbandry 3) I can chat about Lord of the Rings for the next 10 years or so 4) Oooh... and I can bring along food & an obscene amount of booze I imagine most people will opt for no.4 Oh if there's anything else you think I might be useful for let me know! Thanks for organising this Balrog - sorry just sounds more awesome than Tim!!!! Just thinking outloud now but as there's going to be a few people with hydragas pump, do you reckon a change of hydragas spheres complete with lowering pins would be possible? I've got the spheres already and am just in the process of hammeriting them to keep them rust free :D, pins are just a few clicks away and then that's just the fitting left

I've never taken a sphere out before but it doesn't look too hard and do-able in a day. All subject to Steve bringing his hydragas pump of course. We also need to think about fluid. Might make sense for a bulk buy if there's enough people wanting to commit. Suggest you PM Steve.

Fluid's not a problem, some for sale here. Not sure how much is needed for a pump up or the whole system though. I need to get some replacement boots so I can order some at the same time and bring it down with me :)

Hi Tim, Last years "Service Day" was excellent, especially the cold pint afterwards! Unfortunately the "small" matter of our wedding clashes with your weekend so I won't be able to attend:(. If you want the diagnostic tool for the day I would be happy to loan it to you, let me know... Hope the sun shines! hmmmmmm, I wonder can I persuade Maria to get married on Friday...................................................

I checked all the MG calendars before I chose the date but didn't see your wedding listed as an event anywhere :D Hope it all goes well for you. what a fantastic idea , count me (and maybe the other half) in. i was going to do a Remote CL conversion on my 115 in the coming weeks using a guide on here..if i bring the stuff, some tools n some BBQ stuff.. would anyone be up for helping me? im not very car minded at all but i managed to fit my induction kit, lexus lights, tinted windows & LE500 style speedo dials with blue LEDs all myself. i also completly replaced the window regulator a few months back (all using guides mind!) so im able to give a helping hand on any of those points if need be.

Hi Tim, I will be taking you up on your kind offer as not only do I want to learn more about the workings of my mgf but it will also be a good opportunity to meet with like minded enthuiastic mgf owners. I have loads of questions to ask which i will save to the day but i am very keen to attend my first track day and have Castle Combe in mind. See you in June. Regards, Simon. Hi Simon. You will be most welcome at the servicing day. I see you haven't got far to travel ;) Castle Combe is a nice circuit, a bit basic as far as facilities are concerned but maybe that's half its charm. Watch out for the MGoT newsletters arriving in your email to let you know when booking opens. Tim.

Hi Tim, Looking like a great turnout as usual :D I'd expect nothing less from such a well run day like the last two. Do you know of a tyre place nearby that I will be able to get my tracking done after messing with the suspension? I know have the pins so it's looking like a definite go ahead (well once I get on and sand my spare spheres lol). And thanks for the help with my HGF over on .org :) All parts ordered now except for the important Payen HG as no-one local seems to have it

Finally found one locally tonight and am picking it up tomorrow at 10:30 :D Thanks again for all your help Tim :) Now it's time to eat some food and starting porting the inlet manifold, I can't believe how much excess material there is there  And I'd completely forgotten how much of a pain those 4 'underneath' inlet manifold bolts are

I embarked on the road of replacing the head gasket after the third failure. It turned out the fundamental cause of the HGF's was incorrect liner heights, so out came the pistons and liners awaiting a bit of remedial action. The remedial action was to 'linnish' (read sand) the block down by a couple of thou. Duly done i thought I better clean up the pistons before putting them back in, which doing so I bit of one fell off. It turns out that MPi engines tune to(and beyond) 160bhp, as mine is/was can suffer from a portion of piston between the piston ring disintegrating. The up-shot is that I'm buying some matched replacement pistons and liners from DVA and hope to get the engine back together over the next bank holiday. Oh I can dream of only having to replace the HG. I have learnt a lot though. Let's hope I don't have too many bolts left over. Good luck with the HG this weekend. Tim

I'm In! :) Both this site and the day. Great to hear from you again Tim, was worried you wouldn't pop over to the .ORG. What gets done depends on the type of weather, but I still have a remote boot release kit to fit (from last year!) and my brakes are spongey: you still have that pump that you were using last year to replace the fluid? I really regret not using it. BTW, any special type of brake fluid I should get, and how much? As for offering help; not much use I'm afraid, but I can show you how not to do body-work, how not to fit rear speakers and probably how not to fit a remote boot lock by the end of the day :D Oh, and I'll try and be less scatty this year :o . Thanks Tim. Certainly a lot to learn to try and figure it out but the way the MG community pulls together is always amazing to see, it's what's kept me here for as long as I have been and I hope that I can continue to contribute and repay the help that I've received :) Any ideas whether what I thought in my PM might be the cause? No replies on .org to whether it could be or not  If not then it might be off to a couple of the Lotus forums or SELOC maybe :(

Would like to join you all for the service day. Gearbox and oil change etc. I expect that I will not have time to sort out my high reving problem before hand, Would any one be there to advise? I'm sure it's not a cable or throttle body issue, (but I could be wrong!) someone has mentioned the fault could lay with the potentiometer? Would love to get this sorted as well though. Cheers!

Having read about the tribulations of removing the disc retaining screws, if I bring a complete set of new discs and pad (front and rear) for my daughters F is there a willing volunteer to give me (lots of) assistance to fit these? I'll need to beg and borrow tools too (am temporarily "separated" from my personal tool kit!). I understand the THEORY of how to replace these but have never actually done it myself and obviously being my daughter's car I don't want to take any risks! David
Cheers!
I have a spare TB I can bring with me but not sure if it's got the potentiometer with it or not, either way if it sorts your problem then you're welcome to have it :) Tim, could you change me to just helping please. Will find out tonight hopefully whether I'll be coming in the F or not. If it's a head problem then I'll be up and running before I sleep, if it's a liner problem or something more serious then i'll most likely be in the 216 :( Still, at least I'll be there and be able to fit more in lol

Shouldn't be a problem David as long as you are happy to do most of the work yourself. I have a windy gun with a Ph3 bit which gets those screws off in a trice, a puller to get the disks off if they are reluctant and a DTI to check they are running straight. Bring a spot of copper grease.

Read about this on .org and you said numbers were disappointing - I should try and come over from Portsmouth for this as I really want to learn how to maintain myself! What (car) comsumables do I need to bring if I just wanted to do a standard 'service' on it?

I have: 4 new brake discs, 8 new brake pads oil filter, air filter, oil sump plug, brake fluid copper grease tools (some). I might be able to get my hydraulic jack back from the borrower in time. So the plan for my daughter's MGF VVC is: 1) replace oil and filter 2) replace air filter 3) replace all discs and pads 4) renew brake fluid. Anything else I need to get before 13th? We will be the green F and blue TF with Dad and daughter looking lost and helpless - if you see us I'd welcome assistance with the brake stuff - this will be my first attempt at brake replacement! The clutch fluid doesn't have a hard life as far as heat etc is concerned so don't waste your money on the more upmarket stuff unless you are buying it for your brakes anyway. DOT4 will be fine. I have a vacuum brake bleeder which works fairly well sucking fluid from the slave cylinder nipple. Gear oil is long lived and expensive, probably doesn't need doing. What's the mileage and year of your F. Many use Castrol SMX-S but price it up. With respect to your PM about replacing the rear screen. - never done one but it looks simple enough, just a couple of rivets to drill out and replace. Assume you have the screen stitched into the fabric with a zip. Anyone coming done one ????
also i may need my exhaust front pipe fitting too (once i order it). this is pretty straight forward i assume!!
Might be easy, may not be, depends on how the rusty bolts come off. I think having too big a list of stuff to do is likely to end in tears with your car not being in a running condition by the end of the day. Just copying and pasting what I wrote from the mg-rover.org forums: Is it too late to join this? I should be free to join in.... Coming from the Coventry area.... Anyone else going from there? Don't really need to service the car as its not even hit 6000 miles yet but definitely interesting to see how to do it when it comes to it.... Also a little help here and there would be great like replacing the heater fan resistors, etc.... Can bring some tools and maybe my own disposable barbecue, strictly vegetarian? Can bring some food to go on it as well or suppose there will be plenty of shops there?

Wow, only a few days to go, better start getting things organised! Not sure if I'll attempt the boot latch with limited equipment (Widget 'X' that will do the job nicely is always the Widget you leave at home!) but there are many things to be getting on with. :) What Brake Fluid do people recommend? I think someone mentioned something on the .ORG, but it's not letting me in at the moment, so a litre of which type? Also, we appear to be having a few people hacking down from the M25, should we meet up at Fleet Services again (that's the right one, isn't it?). Gotenks what time do you recon (and what car will you be in?!). Also, if someone uses ramps with their F, if you have the room, can you bring them so that I can see if there are any snags in using them? Sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere. Might be easy to find, might never do it. You can replace the sender unit without draining down. De-pressurise the system then put the cap back on and go for it. You only get a dribble.

Reminds me somewhat of last year :o ! Weren't we supposed to have bad weather, but in the end it was only about 5 mins of a light shower? Woke up this morn with a tanned face! Window adjustment seems fine, but hoods a bit noisy at the front, so more adjustment on that I feel. Thanks to all who helped with the blowing fuse/lambder sensor. Am I the first to actually break down AT the service day  Oh! And on the journey home I noticed that the high reving through the gears and idle has returned  Thanks again for our hosts, whom seemed busy all day. If its laid on again in the future, I recomend that you get your arse down there. Always something to learn about your motor and always a helping hand. Cheers!

Tim, Thanks again for the day, and as mentioned on the .ORG:The tire brace is mine! Will need to sort out how to get it back sometime, possibly next year, unless your passing Colchester, me down your way, or someone doing either :). See you later. Ty.
