North Weald - a special event for first-timers

North Weald is an airfield, so not strictly a track-day, but an ideal introduction to driving your car nearer to its limits and exploring how it handles. So if you have never been on track before and don\'t want to dive in the deep end North Weald is a great place to start. It’s a safe environment with plenty of space and our activity days are all run by experienced instructors.
Numbers are limited to just 23 cars and the emphasis is on driving technique. Only one car is active at a time making it the safest of environments. The day begins with the high-speed bend activity. Once everyone has made some progress with this, the day moves on to two, coned circuits providing an opportunity to try out your new found skills and explore the capabilities of your car.
All of this is great fun, but of course is designed to give you the confidence to come away from the day and book your first track day. As this is not a track day, helmets are not required and the overall cost is much lower. This is designed especially for track day beginners who have never taken their cars on a track as a precursor to the next step. I attended one of these days many years ago and have never looked back! Come and join us on Friday May 25th at North Weald. It is easy to get to, being close to the M25 and M11.
The cost will be £45 per car (MGCC members) or £55 (non-members) and places are always oversubscribed so grab a place while you can!

A novice session at Donington

Once again this season we will be running one complete session at our Donington track day (Monday 8th October 2012) for track day beginners, i.e. those who have never taken their car out on a track before. Last season we ran a very successful mentoring system, where we paired up first timers with more experienced (was going to say old, but...) track day attendees. Using this “buddy” system we aim to make your first day on a track an experience that leaves you wanting more. We will help you through the sign-on, car preparation and, if you want us to, sit alongside you during your sessions. You are also most welcome to join us as passengers in our cars during our track sessions.
We are sure that once you have driven around one of the most prestigious motor racing circuits, like Donington, then you will definitely find that you can’t wait for the next date. In the meantime, if you are still thinking about taking your first trip out on track, please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee members - all of our contact details are on the website.

Croft with Lotus on Track

On Friday 20th July we have an opportunity to join our colleagues in Lotus-on-Track at Croft, a fantastic circuit and well worth the trip (if you live in the southern half of the country). This is not our normal exclusive MG session, but it is in the Lotus novice session. However rest assured that Lotus-on-Track operate to the same strict circuit etiquette rules as we do within MGs-on-Track. If this event is not supported it is probably the last time we will get the chance to drive this fine Northern circuit as it is unlikely in the current economic climate to find its way back onto out MGoT calendar. You can book places here: Croft MGoT session.

Castle Combe charity day

Not an MGoT track day, but an early opportunity to join Christopher Darwin’s Charity day at Castle Combe on Thursday 22nd March. The aim is to raise money for two different charities, Combat Stress and BuildASchool, Malawi. At least £3000 plus Gift Aid (25% from HMRC) is likely to be raised on the day. Places are limited to 36 cars with 16 places remaining at the time of writing. The cost of a place is £180 (and can be shared by two cars) or £100 for the half day. If you are interested in attending, e-mail Christopher on Note that cars up to 105dBs will be accepted.

A word from your new scribe

Well Dave alluded to the change of scribe in the last newsletter and here I am! My name is Nigel Silman and I am one of four volunteers who have put themselves up for election to the MGoT committee at the upcoming AGM in March (Sunday 25th). In advance of formally being voted onto the committee, I am helping Steve Brand with the marketing and publicity side of the club – you have probably noticed that he is now writing the MGoT page for Safety Fast! We are splitting the work, and the newsletter is my contribution. Dave is still hand holding me whilst I learn the ropes, but I would like to take this opportunity to pass on an enormous vote of thanks to Dave who has worked tirelessly for MGoT since its inception. I just hope I can do half as good a job as he has done. Look out for me on track, I drive a 2003 Trophy Blue TF135, do come over and say hi.

Our AGM is on March 25th at Kimber House

Oh yes, I mustn’t forget, you are all invited to Kimber House (HQ of the MGCC in Abingdon) on Sunday 25th March for our Annual General Meeting. It’s your chance to have your say and help elect the committee.
